Major medical health insurance, or the catastrophic plan, as some insurance agents call it, saves you from the catastrophe of paying high medical bills just in case you need medical attention, whether it incurs inside or outside of the hospital. This health insurance plan is a good option for consumers who do not want to pay for some part of the insurance coverage that they believe they don’t really need. Low monthly premiums or payments and high deductibles are what this health insurance plan is all about. It comes with certain limitations or restrictions, but such policies usually cover coverage for health care in cases of extreme illness that require a huge amount of money, including the hospitalization.

Most major medical health insurance offers coverage on certain expenses such as surgeries, intensive care, lab tests, diagnostics, x-rays, and hospital stays, but may come with certain limits on room and board. Most of them also offer coverage on the professional fees of doctors, private nurses as well as the purchase or hospital rental of medical appliances. However, there are times that the coverage being offered does not come with coverage of prescription drugs and medicines as well as routine doctor visits. That’s why most insurance agent sell this type of plan in combination with a comprehensive health plan which has coverage for preventive care.

The best candidates for such insurance plan are the young adults who are in their 20’s as well as adults that are between the age range of 50-65. Why them? Because most young adults at that age usually don’t have a health insurance being offered by their employers or possibly because they are self-employed or are still studying and do not have a job. On the other hand, older adults that belong to the 50-65 age range are either up for retirement ad would lost their health insurance coverage from their employers. Some older adults who go for major medical health insurance also take into consideration the possible financial loss when they fall into critical illnesses which are not covered by their current health insurance plan.

Coverage for certain treatments like hormone therapy, dental, vision, infertility treatment, or cosmetic surgery is usually not covered under such health insurance plan. It is also important to take note that the presence of certain pre-existing conditions such as AIDS, emphysema, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, and heart disease are just some of the examples of medical conditions that would disqualify an individual from getting major medical health insurance.

I looked them up online, and found some shady stuff, but a lot of it seemed a couple years old and you have to think, very few people are going to go online to write good reviews.

My 80 yr old mother will shortly be undergoing surgery for which I believe she may need some in-home care afterwards. She has two kinds of insurance (Medicare and a supplement), with no assets to speak of. Does anyone know how I go about finding out what she might be entitled to vis-a-vis in-home care? I’ve read a bit online, but between long-term care, short-term care, home-health care, custodial care, palliative care, Medicare parts A,B,C, and D, and blah, blah, blah….you get the picture. And what if she needs care on a more regular basis, depending on how this all turns out? Overall, I feel like I’m in a bit over my head. Any guidance out there? And thanks for your answers.

If anyone works in the insurance industry and can answer my questions I would much appreciate it. I am a 35 year old housewife, never smoked, 5′5, 116 lbs and have excellent levels for cholesterol (155), Tri (54), HDL (40) and so on……I have no family history of health issues nor does my immediate family. Several months ago I went to my doctor for a sleep issue. I was given a prescription for Ambien. I took it for awhile but do not need it anymore, and have not refilled my prescription in two months. I told this information to the insurance company and proceeded to have the blood work and such done. Basically, I have excellent health, however the one issue. Per the underwriter I have insomnia and am considered a risk!!!! I was given a Standard rate at $44.00 per month. I understand insurance companies share medical information, but how long does this info, “Stay on my record”, can I get doctors report explaining it was a temporary issue and contest the issue? AND… I was also told the underwriter based my “risk” per my recorded conversation when I was honest and explained the reason for my last doctor visit, I figured they would check, which they have not and have no diagnosis as such. Is this legal? I am not in the medical profession, how is it possible the insurance company labels me because of something I said with no diagnosis to back it up. What is the real issue, other than the obvious….$$$$$$$ ????
The policy was term life for 30 years, at 300 k. I did not speak to the underwriter, I spoke with my insurance agent who relayed the info to me. I also spoke to a rather uneducated phone medical screening employee who, I can only guess made a medical determination on what I told him, and kept asking me to spell out words for him!! All the info I submitted is correct, this is why I am puzzled, and would end up more frustrated if I applied to other companies again and again if I been labeled a so called “risk”. I will end up shopping around for more.. Thank you for the advise….

And WE are the ones paying for it thru our taxes!!! This government really sucks when it comes down to taking care of their own people who have been in this country working their tails off all their lives and we always end up with the short end of the stick! So now I really need health insurance for my husband that we can afford, anyone???

If I got addicted to drugs or alcohol, I could get a month stay at a rehab center – totally paid and other special dispensations….short term disability, and a leave of absence.

If I got pregnant from a rape — my abortion wouldn’t be covered.

If I was the victim of a violent crime (which I was) insurance only marginally attempts to cover any counseling or psychiatry.

So how is it that I can get addicted to drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism — and end up on the better end of the deal?!!!!

Instead I try to do the right thing and I can’t afford it. I mean no offense — but depression and anxiety are legit diseases too. How come they don’t merrit the same rehab or help?

This is unbelievable.
